ZuCar Minor B All Ireland semi-final

Thursday July 11th 2024

Kingscourt GAA club, Co Cavan

Dublin 1-08 (11) Tyrone1-09 (12).

Tyrone booked their place in the Minor All-Ireland B final last night (Thursday) with a one-point victory over Leinster champions, Dublin. The game from the outset was a close hard-fought contest.

Both teams showed signs of nerves during the early exchanges with scores coming at a premium. The half time scoreboard read Tyrone 0-04 Dublin 0-03, the narrowest of margins separating the teams even at this stage. Amy Sheedy and Sorcha Gormley were on target for Tyrone during the opening half while Charlie Murphy, Niadh Mooney and Ellen Leddy Doyle registered Dublin’s first half scores.

Dublin made several switches in personal at the break introducing Lucy Ahern, Siobhán Birnie and Hannah Murphy. However, it was Tyrone who registered the first score of the second period. With just  6 minutes gone on the clock, Sorcha Gormley struck for the opening goal of the game following a mix up in the Dublin back line. This crucial goal handed Tyrone a four-point cushion.

To their credit, Dublin responded impressively with three unanswered points, substitute Elsa Kearney, Brogan and Doyle all on song.  Tyrone hit back again with a well taken point by Keeva Owens which was soon cancelled out by another Brogan point before Cora McElduff replied with Tyrone’s seventh point of the game. With 24 minutes gone on the clock, Tyrone had pushed their lead out by 3pts, Tyrone 1-07 Dublin 0-07.

As the game edged into the final 5 minutes two keys moments were about to turn this contest on its head.

Key moment number one, wing back Aoíbh Doyle scored an absolute peach of a goal lobbing Ella McCaffrey from a distance in the Tyrone goal to bring the game all square, with 29 mins gone. Full forward Ciara Brogan tapped on an outrageous point from far out on the right corner to push Dublin ahead by the narrowest of margins with 32 minutes now gone on the clock.

Key moment number two, Keeva Owens hit a speculative shot just outside the 20-metre line which appeared to rebound back off the top of the Dublin crossbar. As the Dublin defenders cleared their lines match referee Declan Carolan (Armagh) blew his whistle. The umpire to the right of the posts was waving the white flag to indicate a Tyrone point. Carolan consulted with both umpires and much to the astonishment of those present in Kingscourt the white flag was waved again and a point awarded to Tyrone.

On the restart, despite Dublin’s best efforts, Sorcha Gormley regained possession for her team. The Tyrone captain went on a darting run, drew a free, which she duly despatched over the bar with 36 mins now gone on the clock.

As Dublin chased an equaliser, they sent a long ball down the left wing aiming for substitute Siobhán Birnie.  Birnie caught the pass but subsequently ended up over the line and a side line kick was awarded to Tyrone.

As the ball re-entered play, the final whistle blew.

Utter dejection and heartbreak for the Dublin girls, their management team and supporters. Tyrone will now play Sligo in the All-Ireland final on July 27th next.
